Two words: STAY HYDRATED! One of the biggest issues for bikers is keeping properly hydrated. If you are not drinking enough water on a ride to use the bathroom every 1.5 to 2 hours, you are likely dehydrated. Carry extra water and remember to hydrate regularly.

Lights are an effective way to see when riding at dusk or evening, but more importantly they help you to BE SEEN by others. LED lights are inexpensive, last for long periods of time on small batteries, and are relatively lightweight. Consider LED blinkers on front and rear of your bike. Lights with 5 LEDS minimum are effective.

If you're traveling in a group of more than 5 or 6 cyclists, consider using two way VOX radios to allow the riders in front and rear to communicate with each other. This allows a safety margin and keeps the group in touch.

Is your recumbent seat making you sore? Remember that not just seat placement, but YOUR placement ON the seat is critical. Are you sliding forward and constantly pushing yourself back in the seat? Shim the nose of the seat up to alleviate this AND it will also relieve some pressure in other parts of your back.

Still have your road bike? Don't toss it just because it's not comfortable. Minimize your ride times on it and use it for cross-training. Limit your rides to 20 miles or less and ride it 2-3 times a week and watch how it strengthens you for riding the bent.

"Rapid" Rachel Mulford

Rachel has grown up with CARES, starting with her first bent when she was nine and progressing to the slick Vision she calls her current steed.  Always looking for a challenge, you can find Rachel picking out the strongest on group rides and challenging them, or you'll find her staying back and enjoying the scenery.

An avid naturalist with designs on being a marine biologist, Rachel has interesting information to share on our rides that take us near the water.
